LIGHTITE SHEETING

THE DEATH AND BIRTH OF STARS

PROJECT UPDATE

Update: CERN have released a summary on Building and characterising the IDS Neutron Detector prototype bars which can be read below.

Progress Update on CERN Project using Lightite® Sheeting

You may have read back in 2015 that our Lightite® Sheeting was being used by CERN – the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, to help model the birth and death of stars. The superior quality of our sheeting has led the organisation that operates the largest particle physics laboratory in the world to utilise the unrivalled quality of our sheeting in order to build detectors capable of measuring neutron radiation. You can read the full article here.

And the results are Impressive!

We caught up with Miguel and asked him how his initial tests went when using our sheeting and the results have been excellent. You can read the full response below:
“Yesterday we just finished a new set of detectors using your sheeting, and the results are excellent.”
“One of the main goals for our new generation detector was to simplify the wrapping in order to be able build more detectors in a shorter time. Of course, for us is very important not to compromise the quality of our detection systems.

After tests last year we discovered a single layer of Lightite® sheeting is indistinguishable from a system wrapped with an intermediate sheet of teflon or aluminised mylar.

That way we managed to halve our construction time, which for large projects like this matters. We are currently building 26 detectors, with another set of 20 planned for next year.”
Below are a couple of photos Miguel kindly provided showing the detectors wrapped in our lightite® sheeting.
We will keep you updated on further progress of the CERN project.
